Track: Three Hancock County athletes win events

first_imgELLSWORTH — Three Hancock County high school athletes took first in events at Saturday’s Penobscot Valley Conference indoor track meets at the University of Maine-Orono.Winners included Ellsworth senior Julia Zavaleta, Bucksport senior Mavis Taungatu’a and Bucksport junior Johann Bradley.Zavaleta edged Hannah Smith of Brewer for first place in the girls’ 800-meter run. Zavaleta won with a time of two minutes and 48.92 seconds. Smith took second in 2:49.79.Ellsworth sophomore Kiona Osterlin placed second in the girls’ one-mile run in 5:44.04. Orono junior Tia Tardy won in 5:08.64.This is placeholder textThis is placeholder textZavaleta and Osterlin’s performances led the Ellsworth girls to a fifth-place finish of seven schools with 29 points in the first meet of the day. Orono won with 113.50.For the boys, Sumner took sixth with 10 points, and Brewer won with 161.In the second meet of the day, Bucksport’s Taungatu’a won the girls’ shot put with a distance of 35-05.25, and Bradley took first in the boys’ pole vault (12-00.00).The Bucksport girls and boys both finished fifth of six teams with 20 and 19 points. The Bangor girls won with 128 points, and the Old Town boys won with 154.last_img
