Lakers growing more concerned with Steve Nash’s health

first_img“I don’t know what the future holds for Steve right now,” Lakers coach Byron Scott said. “He wants to play badly.”So much that Lakers trainer Gary Vitti texted Scott on Thursday, alerting him Nash believed he could play in Thursday’s exhibition against Utah. Nash still sat after feeling “shooting pains down my leg” during pre-game warmups. “That could’ve led to bigger issues,” Nash said. “It wouldn’t be wise to play at this stage until I get relief in that area.”Nash said it’s “important” that he appears in at least one of the Lakers’ remaining preseason games, including Phoenix (Tuesday at Staples Center), Portland (Wednesday in Ontario) and Sacramento (Friday in Las Vegas).Still, Scott has made contingency plans, though Jeremy Lin might sit out a third consecutive game with a sprained left ankle. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Steve Nash emerged onto the Lakers’ practice court, his presence a rare sight after spending the past week mostly in the trainer’s room dealing with back spasms and nerve irritation that have plagued him for the past two years. This also marked the first time in a week Nash spoke with reporters, the Lakers’ guard still remaining optimistic he can overcome an injury that will keep him sidelined Sunday against the Utah Jazz at Staples Center.“With all the work I’m doing,” Nash said, “I think I can be in a position to bounce back quickly.”The Lakers seem less certain after Nash played in only 15 games last season because of nerves affecting his back and hamstrings. After reporting feeling fully healthy this offseason and the first two weeks of training camp, Nash played only the first quarter of the Lakers’ exhibition last week against Golden State before asking out. The Lakers then said Nash felt back spasms on Wednesday after carrying bags. But the Lakers’ guard countered, “I just woke up and had a sore back.”center_img “We all feared this throughout the year,” Scott said of Nash. “We just didn’t know if it was going to be in November or March. We were very optimistic when he started training camp because he did look great. He was in unbelievable shape and moving up and down the floor with no hitch whatsoever. Obviously everybody here is disappointed. There’s nobody more disappointed than Steve Nash.”Nash has not outwardly expressed such sentiments.“It’s inevitable with everything I’ve gone through that there are going to be issues,” said Nash, who will make $9.8 million on the final year of his contract. “On the other hand, I did get through seven or eight hard days as well. I didn’t do that last year. There is some improvement. If I can adapt continually once I heal up here, I can be back on the court.”Frequent flyer A full offseason to recover proved not enough for Lakers forward Xavier Henry to heal from a surgically repaired right knee. So Henry will travel to New York City and Germany for additional treatment, ensuring that will stay sidelined for the Lakers’ four remaining preseason games. The Lakers estimate Henry will return Friday, four days before the Lakers’ season opener against the Houston Rockets at Staples Center.Henry will see Dr. Keith Pyne in New York City for a second opinion. Henry will then see Dr. Jens Hartmann in Dusseldorf, Germany sometime next week and undergo Regenokine treatment, a non-invasive procedure that Bryant has undergone numerous times in recent seasons.Henry averaged 10 points and 2.7 rebounds last season and re-signed with the Lakers to a one-year deal worth around $1 million.Clarkson updateScott said guard Jordan Clarkson could return either Tuesday or Wednesday after missing the past week with a strained left calf muscle.last_img
