All about the pols

IF there was any doubt that the state Legislature’s term-limits initiative is intended solely for the benefit of the politicians, it was exploded by a last-minute amendment last week. Apparently the legislation’s language was unclear about whether it would allow Senate leader Don Perata, D-Oakland, to stay in office longer. After this oversight was pointed out to the legislation’s supporters, they hastily amended it. The initiative would limit the total time legislators spend in Sacramento to 12 years, but allow that entire time to be spent in one job. Currently, legislators are allowed only two terms each in the Senate and Assembly. Passage of this initiative next February would come at exactly the right time to allow Perata and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nu ez to run for an additional term. Politicians like to sell term-limit loosening as a benefit for the public. But clearly there’s plenty of self-interest at play here, too.last_img
