PEMCo. to premiere ‘How to Succeed in Business’

first_imgThe opening of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” this weekend will mark the culmination of nearly one year’s worth of preparation for the Pasquerilla East Musical Company (PEMCo.). “This season started with ‘Next to Normal’ back in October, but really the whole process of this started in the beginning of March last year,” senior PEMCo. producer Nathan Williams said. “How to Succeed” is the second show in PEMCo’s 2012-13 lineup and Williams said he is pleased with the group’s progress as Thursday’s opening night nears. “It’s really come together in a fun way I think,” Williams said. “I’d seen it before and I didn’t like it; I thought it was dated and sexist, but then watching this whole vibe of the ’60s and this whole nostalgic kind of thing, it’s really fun.” Sophomore director Shannon Kirk explained that the show’s seemingly-sexist humor is satirical. “It’s similar to ‘Mad Men’ in that when you’re watching it, obviously the characters aren’t self-aware that it’s sexist,” Kirk said. “It’s just from our perspective of watching it and how the actors portray it now. You have the retrospective awareness, and it adds so many more layers to [the show] from when it originally premiered.” Kirk noted that the recent popularity of ’60s-era television shows like “Mad Men” influenced the choice of “How to Succeed” after the group was unable to secure rights to the original selection, “My Fair Lady.” “With this we were trying to think of things that people would want to audition for and people would want to come see,” Kirk said. While the show wasn’t the troupe’s first choice, Kirk said she is pleased with the outcome. “I’m actually really glad we got to do this,” she said. “‘My Fair Lady’ is probably a better show overall if it’s done perfectly, but this is definitely a more fun show to do in terms of ensemble involvement, and this is more of a comedy.” Williams said while keeping the cast focused and motivated could be challenging, ultimately the entertaining rehearsals and valuable friendships formed made the long process worthwhile. “I think part of the challenge is just maintaining it over such a long process,” he said. “We started with auditions in late October and rehearsals right after that … and then there’s a month off in the middle.” Despite the demands of a lengthy schedule, Kirk praised her cast’s commitment to the show. “Energy hasn’t been much of a problem actually,” she said. “I think people just really enjoy the show and they kind of feed off each other’s energy and the energy the music is bringing.” Kirk whittled the cast down from 100 hopefuls who turned up at the first auditions to the final cast of around 25 people, Williams said. During callbacks, Kirk said she was able to customize the somewhat-flexible characters to fit the potential actors. “[The main character] Finch could be very cute and ambitious, or he could be very conniving, and I like the cute, ambitious one better because then by the end of the show you’re not sick of him,” Kirk said. As a nonacademic organization, PEMCo. offers an opportunity for a diverse array of students – across both majors and class years – to collaborate together. In his PEMCo. debut, freshman Joel Ostdiek portrays rising business star J. Pierrepont Finch. “Joel’s doing great,” Williams said before Tuesday night’s dress rehearsal. Senior Claire Lis, who plays Rosemary Pilkington, agreed. “He came in at the first rehearsal and was thanking everyone and talking about how honored he was to be there,” she said. “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” opens at Washington Hall Thursday at 7:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased in the LaFortune Box Office.last_img read more

Corn Crop Could Be Hurt By Leaf Blight

Image by the Cornell Cooperative Extension.SOUTHERN TIER — As much as one-half of the local corn crop could be lost if northern corn leaf blight hits this year like it did last year, according to Cornell Cooperative Extension. In 2019, northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) appeared throughout the Southwest New York region. This year, farmers might be faced with this disease yet again. Normally, NCLB is more of an issue in fields that have been planted with corn for more than one year in a row. However, this year has been especially challenging due to the consistent temperatures of 65-85 degrees, high humidity, and sporadic rainfall. These conditions all contribute to NCLB in corn production, officials warned.Identifying corn diseases can be difficult. Early NCLB symptoms appear as long, narrow, tan lesions that form on the leaf surface of a corn plant. As the disease progresses, the lesions become longer, more oblong, or “cigar-shaped” and can appear grayish in color. These lesions can range from 1-8 inches long with multiple lesions forming dense, irregular areas of dead tissue on the corn leaves. Once this happens, the plant can no longer develop to its fullest potential, which may reduce crop yields.Research shows there can be a 20 to 50 percent decrease in corn yields if lesions are present prior to or at tasseling, which is the start of ear development. Fields that have been planted to corn for multiple years in a row are at a much higher risk of NCLB because the disease survives the winter on infected corn stubble at the soil surface. As temperatures rise in the spring and early summer, the bacteria that cause NCLB can be splashed or wind-blown onto leaves of the new corn crop. Tilling in old corn stalk residue after the corn is harvested, choosing disease-resistant corn hybrids, and strategic use of fungicides are ways to reduce potential yield loss from NCLB, officials said. The Southwest NY Diary, Livestock and Field Crops Program is working with Cornell University faculty and staff to help producers properly manage this pest. For more information about corn diseases, disease management, or if one suspects their crop has NCLB, contact Field Crops Specialist Josh Putman at 716-490-5572 or jap473@cornell.edu.last_img read more

Jobs count down 500 in September, unemployment down to 6.7 percent

first_imgThe Vermont Department of Labor announced today that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for September 2009 was 6.7 percent, down one tenth of a percent from the revised August rate and up 1.9 points from a year ago. “Vermont’s unemployment rate changed very little in September at 6.7%,” said Patricia Moulton Powden, Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Labor. “Although the rate is low as compared to other states in the region and the country, our labor market is not yet healthy. We continue to lose jobs.  The main driver of the unemployment rate drop is the decline in labor force due to aging demographics and a large number of young workers returning to school.”Job GrowthTypically we expect job growth between August and September in the 7,500 to 7,900 range, largely driven by school support staff returning to work.  Before seasonal adjustment, Total Non-Farm (TNF) jobs grew by 6,600 or 2,3% over the month considerably less than usual. Annual unadjusted job growth fell by 12,650 or -4.1% – a larger decline than we saw in August. Local Government Education, (+9,150 or 64%) State Government Education, (+2,200 or 34.9%) and Private Education Services, (+1,050 or 8.4%) saw the largest seasonal job gains. Almost all other labor market sectors saw seasonal declines. When seasonally adjusted, September job levels fell by 500 or 0.2% over the month. Almost all job sectors were either flat or down.  A notable exception is the Total Private Industries job count at +900.  We believe this to be a statistical anomaly unsupported by any other evidence.  The Total Non Farm estimate is a better gauge of the labor market climate.  The largest job losses were seen in the Total Government sector where a large summer youth program ended. Employment GrowthSeptember’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained essentially unchanged from August at 6.7 percent. This occurred as a result of declining employment (-1,400), but a slightly improved unemployment picture, (-500) as compared to August. It appears that most of those who lost jobs in September left the labor force and are not seeking employment.  This is largely due to the ending of a large stimulus funded summer youth employment program and those employed returning to school. However, Vermont’s total labor force has been declining since May so other forces are contributing to the decline. Vermont’s observed September seasonally adjusted employment, unemployment levels and unemployment rate estimates were not statistically different from August values.  For comparison purposes, the US seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for September was 9.8 percent, up one-tenth of a point from the revised August rate of 9.7 percent. Unemployment rates for Vermont’s 17 labor market areas ranged from 4.0 percent in Hartford to 8.7 percent in Rutland.  Local labor market area unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted. For comparison, the September unadjusted unemployment rate for Vermont was 6.4 percent, up three-tenths of a point from August 2009 and up 1.8 points from a year ago.  The September unadjusted unemployment rate estimate for Vermont was not statistically different from the August rate. The preliminary estimates of nonfarm jobs for September and the revisions to the estimates for November 2008 through Aug 2009, incorporate substantive changes made in the Current Employment Survey estimation procedures. These new procedures are designed to bring the aggregate monthly change in jobs for individual states into closer alignment with the change in national job counts reflected in the estimates produced and published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As a result of these changes, the November 2008 and forward estimates may not be totally comparable to previous months’ data. The impact of these changes in methodology will be better understood when we are able to make benchmark comparisons to Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages.Source: Vermont Department of Labor. 10.21.2009last_img read more

Colombia’s Senator Córdoba Dismissed

By admin

first_imgBy Dialogo September 29, 2010 I think the Colombian government realized far too late, that you don’t need glasses to see what is right in front of your face, it was common knowledge a long time ago. This woman ought to be punished for treason against the country for her shameless statements against a country that pays her a lucrative salary, travel allowance, bodyguards and much more. Her connection to the Colombian Army was common knowledge for many decades. For me and for half of Colombia it seems that what was being conceived is a plot against a senator that isn’t corrupt, and what she does is to serve as a link between the government and FARC and as a matter of fact in one way or another she has to have connections with them and do a good job figuring out the computers but this doesn’t make her FARC as they are now on Dialogo on behalf of those kidnapped for their liberation but what the government and the politicians want is to take her out…they have achieved that…but she is a hard working woman. On the 27th of September the Colombian ATTORNEY GENERAL Alejandro Ordóñez Maldonado announced the dismissal after one was carried out…He is not the ATTORNEY GENERAL he is the PROSECUTOR GENERAL and he licks Alvaro Uribe Velezs boots, look into Alejandro Ordonez Maldonado a shady character and an opportunist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5U-gQ12PXM&feature=related In regards to what they are doing to this woman; in reality what she wants is peace in Colombia. She was authorized by Congress to negotiate with FARC regarding the captives. In addition she represents the Colombian peace movement and hasn’t ruled out the payment of this obligation that in reality is full of treason and dangers by the government taking it into submission and violating its human rights. Politicians, I recommend you read the UN preamble so that this will be rich in experience for future generations internationally for Colombia. The followers of Piedad Cordoba see that the ungrateful Colombian government in designating this woman as a common criminal ridiculing her philanthropic vocation with her people. We as for mercy; mercy with this machinery full of violence against the Colombian people. That is what 75% of us Colombians were expecting…it was about time that justice acted…well done by the District Attorney’s Office and the Prosecutor. I KNOW THAT A GROUP OF PEOPLE FORMERLY KIDNAPPED BY FARC ARE GRATEFUL TO THE FORMER SENATOR, JUST AS THEY WOULD BE WITH CHAVEZ AS WELL OR IN THE PAST WITH PABLO ESCOBAR, GACHA, ETC… THAT SOMEHOW EACH BENEFITED. EVERY TERRORIST OR CRIMINAL HAS THEIR BENEFICIARIES WHICH THEY NEED AS A FRONT FOR THEIR MISDEEDS AND POLITICAL SUPPORT OR FEAR OR TO COVER UP THEIR SINS FROM GOD. BE GRATEFUL YOU HAVE NOT ENDED UP IN JAIL, THANKS TO THE WORK OR REPRESENTATION OF THE GROUP OF FIGHTERS BEFORE THE STATE OF COLOMBIA. Senator Piedad Córdoba has been dismissed from her post in the Colombian Congress and disqualified from serving in the legislative body for 18 years. Colombian Attorney General Alejandro Ordóñez Maldonado announced the dismissal on September 27 after an investigation on electronic media seized during Operation “Fénix” , in which FARC leader alias “Raul Reyes” was brought down in 2008, revealed that Cordoba maintained communication with the leftist guerrilla, according to the statement released by the Colombian General Attorney’s Office. The disciplinary sanction imposed on Sen. Cordoba, will ban her from returning to Congress until 2028 for having “promoted and collaborated” with the illegal guerrilla, reported CNN International. Evidence showed the senator communicated with the terrorist group under the aliases “La Negrita,” “La Negra”, “Teodora,” and “Teodora de Bolivar”. According to investigators, Cordoba advised the guerrilla on different matters, specifically on using voice recordings instead of hostages’ videos as proof of life, reported Colombian daily El Tiempo. While investigators concluded without a doubt that Cordoba overreached her functions and authority to negotiate hostage releases, she has not been charged with treason, concluded the Attorney General. The computer links seized during the 2008 operation matched specific trips by Cordoba and were verified through channels including legal telephone taps on members of the FARC’s Libardo Garcia de Cali block and statements by Ukrainian infiltrator Viktor Tumnyuuk. Piedad Esneda Cordoba Ruiz heads the group “Colombians for Peace” to end the decades-old war between the Colombian government and the FARC.last_img read more

Ecuador Seizes 1.5 Tons of Cocaine on Border with Colombia

first_imgBy Dialogo January 12, 2011 In the coastal province of Esmeraldas (on the border with Colombia), Ecuador seized around 1.5 tons of cocaine hydrochloride that was going to be transported to Mexico by sea, Col. Pablo Santos, the police commander in that jurisdiction, announced on 7 January. “By means of intelligence work carried out over several months, it was detected that there was unusual activity at a ranch that had no visible production of any kind,” Santos told the press. He added that “the merchandise was headed for Mexico.” At the general headquarters of the police in Quito, a source in the press department confirmed to AFP that “a large shipment of drugs was seized in Esmeraldas” by police and naval personnel. Santos indicated that the uniformed personnel detained five Ecuadoreans in the operation, which took place on 6 January in the Borbón area, in Esmeraldas. He noted that the operation, named “Laberinto” [“Labyrinth”], made it possible “to unravel a criminal organization that was dedicated to the stockpiling, possession, and international trafficking of drugs.” The officer said that the cocaine was pressed and distributed into around 1,300 brick-shaped packages, which were buried in four locations on a rural property situated among mangrove swamps. He specified that the drugs were stockpiled at the ranch and that the drug traffickers exported them using speedboats that transported them out to sea in order to transfer them to deeper-draft vessels. Police and military personnel even searched the area looking for a drug submarine. In July, the police reported the seizure in Esmeraldas of an almost-completed submarine under construction, capable of carrying up to twelve tons of cocaine and expected to make its first voyage to Mexico from the Ecuadorean coast. Ecuador confiscated a record 68 tons of drugs, including 64 tons of cocaine, in 2009, and seizures in 2010 amounted to around 18 tons, according to the police.last_img read more

first_img“I think we’re going to come out on the other side had learning so much that we’ll use and carry on moving forward,” Freije said. Every day when a student arrives, their temperature is checked before walking into the building. Students also must wear masks during times they cannot socially distance. “Our ensembles, our gymnasiums are going to look very different,” Strahley “Although it will look different, it’s still going to be it’s still going to be teaching and learning as ever before.” “I really think that we are upping our game in technology and all of the training we had is hopefully going to improve student learning even more than what we were doing before,” Olbrys said. Whitney Freije, a 7th grade teacher, says she never thought she would have to teacher her students virtually, but the new way of learning has allowed the district to tackle the challenge. WINDSOR (WBNG) — Thursday was the first day of school for Windsor Central School District students. COVID-19 precautions are underway at the school. The school closed lockers and moved desks outside of classrooms so they can be socially-distant.center_img For students not doing remote learning, Pre-K through 5th graders will be in-person Monday through Friday. 6th through 12th graders will be in-person every other day. On days students are not in class they will participate via Zoom. 7th and 8th grade teacher Stefanie Olbrys says these changes has given the district a new opportunity to grow. Windsor Middle School Principal Kevin Strahley says the school took the long tables out of the cafeterias and put in individual desks. House puts brakes on deliberation of domestic workers’ protection bill

first_img The House Legislation Body (Baleg) previously agreed to endorse the bill in Thursday’s plenary after gaining support from the majority of House factions on July 1. However, at the House’s Steering Committee (Bamus) forum on Wednesday, the House speakers did not approve the endorsement over “administrative reasons”.The chairman of the bill’s working committee, Willy Aditya, expressed his disappointment, saying he failed to understand the leaders’ reasons to refuse the bill, especially because of technicalities regarding supporting documents.”I’ve done my best to convince the House leaders, but they want to delay the bill. Hopefully, we will still have a way to resolve it,” the NasDem Party politician said on Thursday, adding that he had found nothing wrong in the administrative aspects of the bill.Read also: Stalled domestic worker bill gains momentum, gives hope After receiving praise for including the domestic workers’ protection bill in this year’s National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) list, the House of Representatives had decided to put the brakes in deliberating the decade-old proposed legislation, much to the dismay of activists. The House left the bill out of its list of initiatives during the plenary session on Thursday. The ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the Golkar Party, the two biggest factions in the House, have opposed the bill since it was being discussed at the Baleg, with the PDI-P specifically requesting to delay its deliberation. Seven other factions agreed.Willy, who also serves as one of the Baleg deputy chairs, said the domestic workers’ protection bill was one of the few populist bills at the House, regretting the leaders’ decision to delay it.“Amid so much public criticism against the House for the bills we’ve worked on, amid the less aspirational image of the lawmakers, this is one of the few populist bills,” he said.Willy suspected there was fear among his fellow lawmakers that the bill would formalize the domestic sector, which was actually not the main objective of the regulation. “If they read the draft bill, it stipulates that the recruitment of domestic workers could be done through placement agencies or directly by households. The main principle of this bill is kinship.”The bill, he further explained, regulated work relations between employers and workers in a socio-structural manner that should be based on a working contract to ensure decent working hours and fulfillment of domestic workers rights.Willy said the NasDem faction would seek support from the PDI-P and Golkar so that the House could move forward with the bill’s deliberation this year, as it had been included in the 2020 Prolegnas.Read also: House Legislation Body initiates domestic workers protection billThe bill, a copy of which was obtained by The Jakarta Post, contains several key matters, including provisions on the direct and indirect recruitment of domestic workers as well as their rights. The rights arranged in the bill included the right to education provided by their placement agencies and administered by the government and the right to health and work accident insurance.Placement agencies that do not provide education for workers could face administrative sanctions, ranging from a warning to the revocation of their permit. It also regulates criminal provisions to protect domestic workers from discrimination, exploitation, harassment and violence by employers and placement agencies, both of whom could face up to eight years’ imprisonment or a fine of up Rp 125 million (US$ 8,562) if found guilty of the aforementioned abuse.Lita Anggraini, an activist from the National Network on Domestic Workers Advocacy (Jala PRT), regretted the delay in the bill’s deliberation, saying it showed that House leaders were neglecting about 5 million domestic workers and their families who were living in poverty.”They are the invisible hands that have been contributing to the country’s families’ social, economic and psychological matters, including the careers, professionalism and welfare of their employers, which also include the policymakers and lawmakers,” she said. The bill, she added, was urgently needed to help strengthen the government’s bargaining position in protecting Indonesia’s migrant workers, noting that the government would be seen as weak and inconsistent in the absence of a law on workers’ protection in their own country.A coalition of labor groups also urged House speakers to endorse the bill as its initiative, noting domestic workers still faced mistreatment and poor working conditions, ranging from unlimited workloads, exploitative working hours and a lack of weekly holidays, annual leave and social security to physical and psychological violence.Among the coalition members are the National Federation of Trade Unions (KSPN), the Indonesia Welfare Labor Confederation (KSBSI), the Inter Factory Laborers Federation (FBLP), the National Workers Union (SPN), the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) and All-Indonesia United Workers Confederation (KPBI).”The big factions’ rejection of the bill illustrates the feudal discrimination against domestic workers,” the coalition said in a written statement on Thursday.center_img Topics :last_img read more
