In past years, Spafford has put together special setlists to celebrate Halloween, offering debuts of new covers that aren’t typical to the band’s catalog. Last night, Spafford pushed this idea even farther, throwing down an animal-themed Halloween performance using music from The Lion King throughout their first set. The first set of the night also saw a sit-in by Matisyahu, who came out to freestyle and beatbox during “Leave The Light On”.Throughout last night, Spafford donned costumes of different animals, with guitarist Brian Moss dressed as a crocodile, bassist Jordan Fairless dressed as a giraffe, keys player Andrew “Red” Johnson dressed as a panda, drummer Cameron Laforest dresssed as a lemur, and the band’s crew dressed as zoo keepers. For their Lion King-themed set one, Spafford gave fans a taste of what was to come during the rest of the night, opening with the debut of The Tokens’ 1961 hit “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” which housed the debut of Elton John’s “Crocodile Rock”. After “Crocodile Rock” returned to “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, the band showed off their transitional prowess, moving deftly into “Windmill” to close out the combination.Spafford To Play NOLA Halloween Show; Here’s What They’ve Done In The PastSpafford’s original “People” came next and got the proper Halloween treatment, with the lyrics changed to “Pandas like me and you” as a reference to Red’s panda getup. After this hilarious switch-up, the band invited out Matisyahu to lay out some bars and beatbox during “Leave The Light On” before closing with “Space Gadget” and the band’s live debut of “Bear Necessities” in honor of their tour manager. The band returned for second set with Beck’s “Fucking With My Head”, with the band using this set-opening number as a launch-off point for one of the most exploratory and extensive jams of the evening. From there, the group moved into renditions of their more classic catalog with renditions of “In The Eyes Of Thieves” and “Simon & Lily”. The animal theme returned during “Weasel” via both the title of the song and the “Lion King” teases worked throughout. After a standout rendition of “Backdoor Funk”, Spafford landed in yet another animal-themed tune, closing the second set out with “Salamander Song”. For the group’s encore, Spafford went “All In”, literally, closing out the show with an “All In” sandwich that housed the debut of the beloved Lion King tune “Hakuna Matata”.You can check out the setlist from Spafford’s Halloween show below, plus check out a gallery of photos from Caitlyn Ridenour and Fred Salinas.Setlist: Spafford | Parish at House of Blues | New Orleans, LA | 10/31/2017I: The Lion Sleeps Tonight* > Crocodile Rock^ > The Lion Sleeps Tonight* > Windmill > The Lion Sleeps Tonight*, People&, Leave The Light On%, Space Gadget, The Bare Necessities#II: Fucking With My Head@, In The Eyes Of Thieves, Simon & Lily, Weasel > The Lion Sleeps Tonight* > Weasel, Backdoor Funk, Salamander SongE: All In > Hakuna Matata~ > All InNotes:Animal ThemeRed – “Red” PandaBrian – CrocodileJordan – GiraffeCameron – LemurCrew – Zoo KeepersPhoto: Fred Salinas Photography* The Tokens (The Lion King/FTP)^ Elton John (FTP)& Title and Lyric Change to “Pandas Like Me and You”% With Special Guest Matisyahu# The Jungle Book (FTP)@ Beck (FTP)~ The Lion King (FTP)last_img read more

Phish Returns To The Forum With Jam-Heavy Second Set [Videos/Photo]

first_imgLoad remaining images Phish’s Friday night show at The Forum in Los Angeles, CA saw their return for the 4th time in the 3.0 era. Californians will complain that they don’t get to witness enough Phish (does anyone?), but this weekend set the gearshift for the first-ever two-night stand at the legendary arena. After a couple at Bill Graham’s, The Forum provided yet another indoor playground for Chris Kuroda to light up the walls with industry-defying visuals.Opening with “Chalk Dust Torture,” Trey Anastasio hit the ground running and got the sexy LA crowd fist pumping and head banging from the moment the show began. “Everything’s Right” followed and allowed Page McConnell to slam down on his grand piano while Mike Gordon plucked the bass during a 13+ minute jam that teeter-tottered in the realm of Type 2 very early on. Trey hopped back and forth on his new effect pedals like Tom Hanks in the movie Big and found something to let his guitar scream about for the first of many highlights of the evening. Before “Everything’s Right” got too otherworldly, Jon Fishman brought his bandmates back down to Earth for a standard and slightly flubbed “Rift.”Chalk Dust TortureIn the fourth spot, “Wolfman’s Brother” gave Page the space to bust out some serious funk while Trey karate-chopped a fuzzy, echoing effect to the tight groove. Wolfman’s moderate dance party inspirations allowed each member of the band to hold up a corner of the sonic magic carpet and take the West Coast crowd for a ride before pumping the breaks for Mike Gordon’s newer tune, “How Many People Are You.” For a song that normally relies on the strong vocal delivery, Gordon missed the mark on some of the lyrics, but the minor brain-farts were soon forgotten after Trey nailed every note of “Horn” with pinpoint accuracy. While it is rare to see rain in LA and impossible from the 18,000-indoor arena, “Water in the Sky” got a rise out the crowd and gave their feet a rest before the set-ending “Sand,” highlighted by Trey’s tonal takeover. Page rocked an amazing octopus short-sleeve button-down on stage Friday night and his playing reflected the qualities of the soft-bodied, eight-armed mollusk of the sea. Burying yet another excellent on-paper first-set in the Summer 2018 graveyard, the stellar “Sand” gave fans something to talk about during set break.Page continued his rampage in Set 2 during “Blaze On” as Trey called out “Blaze on Leo!” while Gordon surfed a smooth groove to surround Trey’s heavy wah wah effects. Another song containing lyrics about sand and water, the entire quartet floated into the second act with a cohesive and calming approach to the Type 2 atmosphere. The blaze would be extinguished by a dream-like ambience until Gordon fired back with the iconic riff that introduces “Down With Disease.” The high energy “DWD” jam ignited the crowd as the band continued on their path of destruction. Trey held a note that felt like forever before tenaciously digging back into his guitar which captivated the ravenous crowd. Collective patience created progress as they fused together to create the Phish of our wishes.Blaze OnFishman sped up the tempo after a “DWD” that left the fans wanting more to dive into “Simple.” The skyscraper-loving citizens from the City of Angels raised their hands to the roof as Trey found yet another pocket of tranquility via the electric guitar and rode the wave to the delight of many. Once again, the potentially epic jam was lullabied to sleep by Trey as he signaled to Fishman via a siren-sounding effect, summoning the 90’s funk launch pad, “Ghost.”Trey was given some bonus time to experiment with his pedals, oozing out a thick bluesy resin to the delight of the ghost hunters in the audience. Gordon (voted as the band member most likely to blow your mind with his nightly ensembles) added a pulsating bass to follow Trey’s notes around stage like a bodyguard. Page once again showed off his hidden tentacles as the fiery “Ghost” reached its glory around the 11-minute mark. The nearly 50-minute “Blazed, Diseased, Simple Ghost” mega-mix finally ended in the form of “Bouncin’ Around the Room,” giving the crowd a moment to catch their breath and collect their faces. While each song in the first half of the set had the opportunity to pack an even heavier punch, the overall message is clear; the force is strong after just seven shows this season. Continuing the “Phish’s Greatest Hits” Set Two, “Mike’s Song” stirred the audience once again. Trey and Page put in the extra effort during the raunchy original, but appeared to be running out of time. Jon motioned for them to lighten up quickly with “Slave to the Traffic Light” which hasn’t followed that set-ending order since the one and only time during July 2013’s Tahoe performance. One of the more comical songs in Phish’s authentically whacky repertoire, “Sleeping Monkey” began the encore with full audience participation. Trey turning the mic to face the vocal audience and proclaiming what the fans were thinking, “Yes! Yes!” He pretended to wipe tears from his eyes when looking up at the rafters and seemed as giddy as a school girl, or school boy, or fully-revived monkey. Gordon slapped the bass a little bit harder as Trey grinned a little brighter when they closed the encore with the expectedly energetic “Weekapaug” to beg the question; how are they planning to top that on Saturday night’s follow-up gig?Setlist: Phish | The Forum | Inglewood, CA | 7/27/18SET 1: Chalk Dust Torture, Everything’s Right, Rift, Wolfman’s Brother, How Many People Are You, Horn, Water in the Sky > Twenty Years Later > SandSET 2: Blaze On > Down with Disease > Simple > Ghost > Bouncing Around the Room > Mike’s Song > Slave to the Traffic LightENCORE: Sleeping Monkey > Weekapaug GroovePhish | The Forum | Inglewood, CA | 7/27/2018 | Photo: Carson Church Media Photo: Carson Churchcenter_img Carson Churchlast_img read more

Local teachers get an education in addressing hard questions

first_imgRace and socioeconomic status are often predictors of future advantage or disadvantages in life. K‒12 education can be another. To raise the floor and help teach school leaders how to confront and counteract racism in their classrooms, two students at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education recently created a program on race and equity in education and offered it to teachers in Boston and Cambridge. In a recent email exchange, the Gazette asked both of the students, Soraya Ramos and Cassandra St. Vil, to explain the program. They did so in their written responses, together and individually.Q&ASoraya Ramos & Cassandra St. VilGAZETTE: What motivated you to develop this?RAMOS AND ST. VIL: We had both been teachers before coming to Harvard, and we recognized the importance of preparing coherent and effective sessions around the uncomfortable topics of race and racism. How do we discuss racism in a color-blind society? How can we push for the difficult conversations without defensiveness? What actions do we want this community to take as a result of attending these sessions? We were up for the challenge. It took three months of planning to tackle these questions in thoughtful ways to share with local professionals.RAMOS: A quote by the legendary Civil Rights leader and Congressman John Lewis has resonated with me since the very first time I heard it. “If not us, then who? If not now, then when?” Those were the words that crossed my mind when we were first asked about developing and facilitating these sessions. Although I had some self-doubt about the potential outcomes, I was well aware of the urgency of discussing difficult topics like racism with professionals in education, especially given the contentious political climate. Avoiding these conversations would not only be a disservice to our students, but also a missed opportunity to build empathy across lines of difference.GAZETTE: How did you get started?RAMOS AND ST. VIL: We decided to employ the critical race theory (CRT) framework as a lens to understand racism and counteract it in our lives and workspaces. Derrick Bell, lawyer, scholar, and former Harvard professor, is credited as the founder of critical race theory. It began as counter-legal scholarship arguing against the objectivity of law and its practitioners. CRT centered the conversation on the convergence of power, race, and racism to address the liberal notion of color-blindness. Longtime educator Gloria Ladsen-Billings is known for translating CRT into education.Six tenets within critical race theory framed our sessions, and the common ways that racism manifests in schools and out-of-school-time (OST) programming. By expanding knowledge of meritocracy, liberalism, color-blindness, interest convergence, intersectionality, and the permanence of racism, our OST community was given language and vocabulary to notice — and then name — injustices students experienced in their everyday lives.GAZETTE: What kinds of topics or ideas were raised?RAMOS AND ST. VIL: Our sessions operated from the fact that racism exists and is woven in the fabric of the U.S. Our community of OST professionals created a space safe to ask questions and consider ideas, as well as confront racism and discrimination. We recognized that we were all somehow complicit in perpetuating systems of oppression and collaborated on ways in which to counteract it.We were both intentional and relentless in our session design, and we were extremely pleased that the community was highly engaged and participatory. The first session began with the vulnerable work of identity. As practitioners, we would be required to introspect and ask ourselves difficult questions shaping our work: Who am I? How does my identity affect the work I do in communities of color? Session two continued this community-building, working together to spiral understanding and application of CRT tenets, as well as model action planning toward specific counter-racist strategies.GAZETTE: This topic seems particularly poignant and important in today’s world. Did the attendees find the lessons and discussions helpful?RAMOS AND ST. VIL: One attendee told us that the way they plan to counteract racism is by speaking up and starting an open conversation, holding back judgment and listening. Many attendees told us that they were very happy with what they learned. Nearly 94 percent of respondents said they strongly agreed that the sessions trained them how to use critical race theory tenets to understand racism. One hundred percent indicated that they left with strategies to counteract racism in their work. Some discussed counter-storytelling as a method to share marginalized narratives. We really couldn’t be happier with the outcome.GAZETTE: What have you learned, or taken away, from this experience?RAMOS: I learned that adults and students must build the competencies to have the difficult conversations on race and racism. I also learned that I must be patient with adults’ learning, and although there is urgency in counteracting racism, I must remember that changing hearts and minds is a process.ST. VIL: I remembered that I love this work. Most people want to push past the normal, have their racial identities included, and respect the identities of others … but don’t always have the toolset to be able to do so. I am not an expert, but I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to demonstrate the curiosity, openness, and courage it takes to dismantle racism and oppression with a community of eager professionals who care about kids.GAZETTE: So what’s next for both of you, now that you’ve graduated?RAMOS AND ST. VIL: We’re both extremely committed to continuing to promote equity in schools, and we’re both planning on continuing anti-racism work moving ahead.ST. VIL:I intend to open a cultural-immersion, college-preparatory high school.RAMOS:And I am seeking opportunities to continue consulting in diversity, equity, and inclusion, with particular emphasis on urban education. This interview has been lightly edited.last_img read more

Spurs part with Sherwood

first_img Sherwood took charge of Spurs in December last year on an 18-month deal following the departure of Andre Villas-Boas although his future has been under scrutiny for some time. Despite leading the north London club to a sixth-place finish in the Barclays Premier League, ensuring qualification for the Europa League next season, it has been decided the 45-year-old will not continue in his role. “We have a talented squad and exciting young players coming through. We need to build on this season, develop our potential and inspire the kind of performances that we associate with our great club.” Having never managed at the top level before, Sherwood was initially installed as interim replacement for Villas-Boas, with a Capital One Cup exit to local rivals West Ham his first game in charge. A 5-1 home defeat to eventual champions Manchester City and a 4-0 thrashing at Chelsea saw Sherwood question the commitment of a number of his players. He always claimed the uncertainty over his position was making the job harder and, as the season drew to a close, even his players started suggesting Sherwood’s tenure was coming to an end. Midfielder Sandro, who had fallen out of favour under Sherwood, told ESPN Brazil he was expecting a new man to be in charge at the start of the new campaign and now he has been proven correct. Reports surfaced at the end of April that Levy had been in contact with Ajax to enquire about the availability of De Boer, but Southampton boss Pochettino is the favourite to take charge at White Hart Lane, with initial front-runner Van Gaal set to be installed as Manchester United’s new manager. Manager Tim Sherwood has parted company with Tottenham. “We appointed Tim mid-season as someone who knew both the players and the club,” said chairman Daniel Levy in a statement on the club’s official website. “We agreed an 18-month contract with a break clause at the end of the season and we have now exercised that option.” Sherwood has long been battling against suggestions he would be relieved of his duties at the end of the season – with names such as Louis van Gaal, Frank de Boer and Mauricio Pochettino consistently linked to the post. Having worked with the club’s younger players, Sherwood has stated many times that he would never wish to return to his developmental role with Spurs. When asked in his press conference ahead of their final game of the season against Aston Villa he revealed he was not confident he would be managing anywhere next year. During his spell in charge Sherwood compared his position to that of a babysitter and a supply teacher but did guide the club to victories over Manchester United at Old Trafford, ending the season with a win percentage of 59 per cent. The club’s statement went on to suggest a new head coach is not yet in place. “Moving forward, now the season is over, we shall embark on the process of finding a new head coach,” it continued. Chelsea’s Supporters’ Trust put managerial stability ahead of trophies

first_imgChelsea’s Supporters’ Trust says managerial stability is seen as more important than winning trophies on a consistent basis. With Chelsea struggling in their title defence this season, Mourinho’s position has come under scrutiny, but in its annual survey, the club’s Supporters’ Trust has outlined a desire for stability – although it should be noted the survey was carried out in May. “Management stability and progressing home grown players through to the first team are seen as more important than attractive football and consistently winning silverware,” the Trust said. Reporting the results of a survey of its members, with scores out of five, the Trust gave ‘giving a manager time to implement a plan’ a score of 4.59 with ‘winning trophies every season’ rated at 3.29. Press Associationcenter_img The Blues have enjoyed a period of unprecedented success since Roman Abramovich’s 2003 takeover, winning four Premier League titles, two European crowns and a host of domestic cups. Managers have come and gone at a rapid rate, though, with current boss Jose Mourinho in his second spell and as such the 10th coach to serve the Russian. last_img read more
